Doula Group FAQ

Welcome! We’re so glad you’re considering our group doula practice. Below are answers to the most common questions about how our doula group based practice model works.

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the birthing person before, during, and after childbirth to help achieve the most satisfying experience possible.

How is your group practice different from having a solo doula?

In our group practice, you are cared for by a team of doulas rather than one individual. This means that we rotate support every 12 hours during labor, ensuring that you always have an energized, well-rested doula by your side.

Why do you rotate doulas every 12 hours?

Labor can be long and unpredictable. Our 12-hour rotation model ensures that you are supported by doulas who are well rested, attentive, and able to give you their best throughout your labor. This approach also prevents burnout and allows for continuity of quality care.

Will I meet all the doulas before labor?

Yes! We schedule prenatal appointments where you’ll get to know each member of the doula team. This ensures you feel comfortable with whoever is present during your birth.

How does the rotation work during labor?

Once you go into active labor and request support, the doula on call will join you. Every 12 hours, if your labor is still ongoing, the next doula on the rotation will arrive and transition seamlessly with the current doula to continue your care.

What if I don’t want to switch doulas mid-labor?

We understand this concern. While we encourage our rotation system to maintain the quality of care, we are flexible and always prioritize your comfort. If your labor is progressing quickly or you express a strong preference to keep your current doula, we’ll discuss options as needed.

Will the doulas communicate with each other?

Absolutely. Each doula provides detailed handoffs to ensure continuity of support, including your preferences, emotional state, and any important developments in your labor.

How do you maintain consistency in care with multiple doulas?

Our team trains and collaborates regularly to align on birth philosophies, support techniques, and communication strategies. We work together closely, so our care feels cohesive and unified no matter who is supporting you at the moment.

Who will I see during prenatal appointments?

You’ll have the opportunity to meet the team across several prenatal visits and by attending our mini workshops. We ensure each doula has a chance to connect with you personally and understand your birth preferences.

What if I go into labor at night or on a holiday?

You will always have a doula available. Our team operates 24/7, and our rotation schedule ensures someone is ready to join you whenever you need support—day or night.

What if two clients go into labor at the same time?

With our group structure, we have the staffing capacity to support multiple clients at once. We carefully manage scheduling to avoid overlap and have a backup doula on call if needed.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. We are currently in network with Medi-Cal and working on several others. We can also provide superbills that you can submit for potential reimbursement through your insurance provider.
